How to EXPLORE your GATE 2013 ?

Gate 2013 exams are nearing and by now you want to accelerate your
gate 2013 preparation. You want to push through the syllabus and get
more out of your study time.
Then here's a simple but effective technique to accelerate the pace of
your learning.
For this to work. You are required to have read the topics at least
once. You need to know what is where and what is what of the gate
syllabus.
The technique is to "take open book test" once you have covered some
topics or part of the syllabus!!
Simple but works everytime.
Gather 4 textbooks or question papers of your chosen subjects and
randomly take a open book test.
Atempt the questions without seeing the book. If stuck, try hard to
remember the answer and if no success then only see the book. Ater
seeing write down the answer without peeping at the answer again!!
Do it enough time and you will see how much you can cover in shot span
of time. Do it with all the topics, do it several times and you will
see how testing yourself, this way, increases your learning capacity.
Why it works I don't know! But it works. I have used this countless
times in my studies in AeSI!
And while selecting questions randomly, don't read the question you
are selecting. Just think of some random numbers and answer questions
against those numbers.
Hope you will at least give this simple exercise a go. Go test for
yourself.

I agree with all the books and if you see most of the books are ones that you might have read in AeSI syllabus. GATE is all about basics, so keep them strong and do tons and tons of problems!! That's the basic secret of cracking GATE!!

Career opportunities after GATE

There are numerous students who are not even aware that there are various institutions in our country that are offering specialized post-graduation programmes in varied disciplines. Student’s who qualify GATE get opportunities such as attractive scholarships, assistantship for postgraduate courses in engineering, technology, architecture, pharmacy at some of the best engineering colleges, institutes in the country. There are several engineering colleges and institutes that specify GATE as an obligatory qualification even for admission of students into post-graduation programmes.

After qualifying GATE, candidates get to explore number of education avenues for bright future. In addition to options waiting such as M.Tech and M.E, GATE qualified candidates also become eligible for the award of junior research fellowship in CSIR Laboratories. Consecutively the candidate needs to enquire about the final selection and award of scholarship/Assistantship from the respective Institution to which the candidate seeks admission.

The Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) is an all-India examination administered and conducted by the GATE committee comprising faculty from IIS Bangalore and seven IITs on behalf of National Coordinating Board- GATE, Department of Education, Ministry of Human Resources Development (MHRD), and Government of India. With the objective to identify meritorious candidates for admission to the post graduation programmes in engineering, technology, architecture and pharmacy at National Level.

But the question still arises, as to why one should take up GATE examination? As if now, we are aware of the fact that science post graduate and engineering graduates take up GATE to study M.Tech, M.E and M.Sc. M.Tech degree leads a candidate to specialization and further enhancing their interest in a certain area that may lead to PhD. Also M.Tech is the best path for those who are aspiring to apply for Faculty or Research position in educational institutes and R&D centers.

After appearing and qualifying the GATE examination, there are a few steps the candidates can take:

• After the GATE results are out, students must apply to various institutes and get their individual forms filled up.

• There are number of institutes and colleges that advertise the notification in leading daily newspapers from 1st April till end of July. Still there are numerous institutes that do not advertise and therefore the students need to get the forms themselves.

• While filling the application forms, one needs to mention their GATE score along with other details.

• The concerned institute may also conduct written test or interview for the purpose of admission.

QUESTION PAPER PATTERN FOR GATE 2010

The question paper will consist of only objective type questions. Candidates have to mark the correct choice by darkening the appropriate bubble against each question on an Objective Response Sheet (ORS). There will be negative marking for wrong answers. The deduction for each wrong answer will be 25% of the allotted marks. Each paper contains 60 questions carrying 100 marks. Question Papers bearing the codes : AE, AG, AR, CE, CH, CS, CY, EC, EE, IN, MA, ME, MN, MT, PH, PI, PY and TF Paper Code Patterns of Question papers Negative Marks for wrong Answer AE, AG,AR, CE,CH, CSCY, EC,EE, IN,MA, ME,MN, MT,PH, PI ,PY, TF Q.1 to Q.20 : Will carry one mark each (sub-total 20 marks). 1/3 mark will be deducted for each wrong answer Q.21 to Q.50 : Will carry two marks each (sub-total 60 marks) 2/3 mark will be deducted for each wrong answer. Q.51 through Q.56 (3 pairs) will be common data questions. Each question will carry two marks 2/3 mark will be deducted for each wrong answer. Question pairs (Q.57, Q.58) and (Q.59, Q.60) will be linked answer questions.The answer to the second question of the last two pairs will depend on the answer to the first question of the pair.If the first question in the linked pair is wrongly answered or is un-attempted, then the answer to the second question in the pair will not be evaluated. Each question will carry two marks There will be negative marks only for wrong answer to the first question of the linked answer question pair i.e. for Q.57 and Q.59, 2/3 mark will be deducted for each wrong answer. Sections 1 & 2 in PART B Part B will contain two sections : Section 1 (Geology) and Section 2 (Geophysics). In this section, Q.21 to Q.50 (30 questions) will carry two marks each (sub-total 60 marks). 2/3 mark will be deducted for each wrong answer. Q.51 to Q.56 (3 pairs) will be common data questions Each question will carry two marks. 2/3 mark will be deducted for each wrong answer. Question pairs (Q.57, Q.58) and (Q.59, Q.60) will be linked answer questions:. The answer to the second question in these two pairs will depend on the answer to the first question of the pair. If the first question in the linked pair is wrongly answered or is un-attempted, then the answer to the second question in the pair will not be evaluated. There will be negative marks only for wrong answer to the first question of the linked answer question pair i.e. for Q.57 and Q.59, 2/3 mark will be deducted for each wrong answer. XE Paper – Section A (Engineering Mathematics) Section A in XE paper There will be 12 questions carrying 20 marks in XE Section A (Engineering Mathematics) paper Q.1 to Q.4 (4 questions) will carry one mark each (sub-total 4 marks). 1/3 mark will be deducted for each wrong answer. Q.5 to Q.12 (8 questions) will carry two marks each (sub-total 16 marks) 2/3 mark will be deducted for each wrong answer. XE section papers (Sections B through G) will contain 24 questions carrying 40 marks Sections B, C, D, E, F & G in XE papers Q.1 to Q.8 (8 questions) will carry one mark each (sub-total 8 marks) 1/3 mark will be deducted for each wrong answer. Q.9 to Q.18 (10 questions) will carry two marks each (sub-total 20 marks). 2/3 mark will be deducted for each wrong answer. Q.19 through Q.22 (2 pairs) will be common data based questions. Each will carry two marks 2/3 mark will be deducted for each wrong answer. Q.23, Q.24 will be linked answer questions.The answer to the second question of the pair of linked question will depend on the answer to the first question of the pair. If the first question in the linked pair is wrongly answered or is un-attempted, then the answer to the second question in the pair will not be evaluated. Each will carry two marks For Q.23, 2/3 mark will be deducted for wrong answer. There will be no negative mark for Q.24. XL Paper Section H (Chemistry) Section H in XL paper There will be 18 questions carrying 30 marks in XL Section H paper Q.1 to Q.6 (6 questions) will carry one mark each (sub-total 6 marks). 1/3 mark will be deducted for each wrong answer. Q.7 to Q.14 (8 questions) will carry two marks each (sub-total 16 marks) 2/3 mark will be deducted for each wrong answer. (Q.15, Q.16) will be common data questions . Each question will carry two marks each 2/3 mark will be deducted for each wrong answer. Question pair (Q.17, Q.18) will have linked answer question. Each question will carry two marks each. There will be negative marks only for wrong answer to the first question of the linked answer question pair. For Q.17, ⅔ mark will be deducted for wrong answer. There is no negative mark for Q.18. XL Paper Sections (Sections I through M) Sections I, J, K, L & M in XL paper XL section papers (Sections I through M) will contain 21 questions carrying 35 marks Q.1 to Q.7 (7 questions) will carry one mark each (sub-total 7 marks). 1/3 mark will be deducted for each wrong answer. Q.8 to Q.21 (14 questions) will carry two marks each (sub-total 28 marks). 2/3 mark will be deducted for each wrong answer. Types of multiple choice questions Multiple choice questions in all papers and sections will contain four answers, of which only one is correct. The types of questions in a paper may be based on following logic: (i) Recall: These are based on facts, principles, formulae or laws of the discipline. The candidate is expected to be able to obtain the answer either from his/her memory of the subject or at most from a one-line computation. ExampleQ. During machining maximum heat is produced(A) in flank face (B) in rake face(C) in shear zone (D) due to friction between chip and tool. (ii) Comprehension:These questions will test the candidate?s understanding of the basics of his/her field, by requiring him/her to draw simple conclusions from fundamental ideas. ExampleQ. A DC motor requires a starter in order(A) to develop a starting torque(B) to compensate for auxiliary field ampere turns(C) to limit armature current at starting(D) to provide regenerative braking (iii) Application: In these questions, the candidate is expected to apply his/her knowledge either through computation or by logical reasoning.ExampleQ. The sequent depth ratio of a hydraulic jump in a rectangular channel is 16.48. The Froude number at the beginning of the jump is:(A) 10.0 (B) 5.0(C) 12.0 (D) 8.0 (iv) Analysis and Synthesis: These can be linked questions, where the answer to the first question of the pair is required in order to answer its successor. Or these can be common data questions, in which two questions share the same data but can be solved independently of one another. Common data questions:Multiple questions may be linked to a common data problem, passage and the like. Two or three questions can be formed from the given common data problem.   • Some books helpful for pre-requisite knowledge on the subject

2.Keep contact with some expert and GATE experienced persons
3.Study - Syllabus and Previous questions papers
4.Start from the first chapter
  • read at least 5 books, it will widen your knowledge(if necessary consult with the books for pre-requisite knowledge or with some expert)
  • Note down the probable concepts(definitions, unit, dimension etc.)
  • Note down necessary theories, formulae etc
  • Solve problems as maximum as possible(from text books, Guide books etc)
  • Think about various tricks in solving problems(if necessary, note it)
  • Go for series of self tests based on this chapter(take other's help to conduct tests)
  • Continue the self tests until getting a very good score
5.Solve more and more problems, discover more and more new tricks…
6.Follow the same procedure for the rest chapters
7.Finally, go for self tests based on whole syllabus(take other's help to conduct these tests)
8.On the exam day…you will be at the Pick, who can stop you?

HOW TO PREPARE FOR GATE EXAM?

Preparing for GATE can be as easy as preparing for your college examinations. Just take little cautions while studying any topic and do remember that GATE paper focus on your in depth knowledge of subject, your basics, presence of mind during examination etc.

I’ll recommend following while preparing for your GATE exams people may differ as this is my personnel opinion :

1)Always follow standard books for GATE. Try to cover complete syllabus. If not possible expertise in what ever portion of syllabus you practice.

2)Try preparing notes after reading every chapter/topic. This may initially take some time but will help you while revising before paper. Click here for expert tips to prepare notes for GATE.

3)While reading any chapter/topic do ask your self following questions “What”, “How”, and “Why” and see improvement

4)Best way to prepare is to follow cycle Learn, Test, Analyze, Improve, Learn, Test, Analyze, Improve ……

7)Don’t worry if your percentage in university exams is low as GATE admissions do not consider them. Just maintain minimum percentage required by many colleges including IIT’s. Look at GATE Cutoff and eligibility section to know eligibility and cut off of various colleges.

8)Group study is one of the best ways of preparation. Divide sections/topics between you and your partner and have a brief session on topic from your friend before you actually start topic. This will save your time and efforts and will improve your and your partner’s understanding on the topic.

9)Normally coaching for GATE is not required but if you are not able to concentrate much then this is a good option.

  1. Make notes short and concise
  2. Maintain formulas, short-cuts and tips/tricks in notes

Structure of Gate

Structure of Gate Keep track of everchanging GATE Syllabus. Inform the same to others too. The GATE 2008 examination consists of a single paper of 3 hours duration and carries a maximum of 150 marks. The question paper of GATE 2009 will be fully objective type. Candidates have to mark the correct choice by darkening the appropriate bubble against each question on an Objective Response Sheet (ORS). There will be negative marking for wrong answers. GATE NEW QUESTION PATTERN 2011

GATE 2010 pattern is officially released . Few changes are made in paper pattern .They are as follows.

1. GATE 2010 will be conducted by IIT Guwahati

2. The pattern is set to change again from the previous pattern.55 questions technical + 10 questions General Aptitude - 100 marks

3. GATE Score will be valid for two years. Once again. (officially not confirmed)

4. Now you can give the exam in 3rd year itself.(confirmed)

5. GATE 2010 - Pharmacy still remains unincluded.(confirmed) There is news that Pharmacy exam will be taken up by AICTE.
6. GATE 2010 examination for Mining Engineering (MN) and Textile Engineering and Fibre Science (TF) papers will be computer based ONLINE examination.

7. GATE Board is currently in discussion whether to extend the validity of GATE 2009 score to 2010. But they have not decided yet. It will be decided by December.

Paper Pattern

Q.1 to Q.25: Will carry one mark each (sub-total 25 marks).

1/3 mark will be deducted for each wrong answer.
Q.26 to Q.55: Will carry two marks each (sub-total 60 marks) 2/3 mark will be deducted for each wrong answer.

Q.48 through Q.51 (2 pairs) will be common data questions. Each question will carry two marks 2/3 mark will be deducted for each wrong answer.

Question pairs (Q.52, Q.53) and (Q.54, Q.55) will be linked answer questions.

The answer to the second question of the last two pairs will depend on the answer to the first question of the pair.

If the first question in the linked pair is wrongly answered or is un-attempted, then the answer to the second question in the pair will not be evaluated. Each question will carry two marks

There will be negative marks only for wrong answer to the first question of the linked answer question pair i.e. for Q.52 and Q.54, 2/3 mark will be deducted for each wrong answer. There is no negative marking for Q.53 and Q.55.

Q.56 to Q.60 : From General Aptitude (GA) will carry one mark each (sub-total 5 marks).

1/3 mark will be deducted for each wrong answer.
Q.61 to Q.65 : From GA will carry two marks each (sub-total 10 marks) 2/3 mark will be deducted for each wrong answer.

All the papers bearing the codes AE, AG, BT, CE, CH, CS, EC, EE, IN, ME, MN, MT, PI and TF will contain few questions on Engineering Mathematics carrying 15 marks.
GATE Forms will be available from 22 September. At select banks and from IIT/IISc counters.

General Aptitude Syllabus :
Verbal Ability: English grammar, sentence completion, verbal analogies, word groups, instructions, critical reasoning and verbal deduction.

Numerical Ability: Numerical computation, numerical estimation, numerical reasoning and data interpretation.
